Why should I get a cooling system service?

Question:

Why should I get a cooling system service? I thought it was only necessary if my car is overheating…

Answer:

Great question! We appreciate you trusting us at Accurate Automotive with this question. We pride ourselves in offering honest, quality vehicle repair at a price that’s fair and a part of being honest is educating our customers on how their engine and vehicle systems work.

To people, it may seems that, if your engine is running at the proper temperature then everything must be just fine. But the fact is that engine overheating is the most common cause of mechanical failure and it is something that can be expensive to repair. So how do you get from everything is just fine to suddenly overheating and potential engine damage?

Truth is, it is not a sudden process, but it is an invisible one if you are not keeping your vehicles service schedule. Your engine coolant circulates through your engine where it absorbs heat and then flows through the radiator where it is cooled – and then back to the engine again. If the coolant can flow freely – and there are no leaks – then the coolant can do its job. This is the point where you must look deeper.

The cooling system is a harsh environment: very hot, with several reactive materials like various types of metal, plastics and rubber. Over time the coolant becomes corrosive. Small pieces of metal and other materials flake off and circulate in the coolant. These bits can start to clog up the small passages in the radiator, impeding the coolant flow, leading to overheating. Corrosive coolant can eat away at the system and cause leaks as well.

Now new coolant is full of anti-corrosion additives. These additives neutralize the reactions that lead to corrosion. The additives are eventually used up, leaving the cooling system unprotected.
Therefore, your vehicle manufacturer often gives a recommendation for when your cooling system should be serviced. Your service technician can also test your coolant for freeze point and PH to see if it needs to be replaced (if you’ve added straight water to the system these numbers may be off). You need to get fresh coolant in there to continue to protect against damaging corrosion.
So, if you’ve gone beyond the recommended service interval, take care of this important maintenance service to prevent unnecessary repairs down the road.
We hope this helped answer your question but if not, feel free to give us a call

Lee’s Answer on Engine Water Pumps

My water pump went out and it costs much more to replace on this vehicle than the ones I’ve had replaced in my older vehicles in the past. I trust Accurate Automotive since I’ve worked with you for many years but my technician said it’s because of where it’s located. Can you please help me better understand that?

Answer from Lead Technician and Owner of Accurate Automotive Lee Weatherby:

Thank you for being our loyal customer for so many years. We are proud of our 31 years in business and customers like you help make it possible.

The thing with engines is they are all built a bit differently. Some water pumps are driven by the serpentine belt and are bolted on out in the open with the alternator and air compressor and such.  Other water pumps are driven by the timing belt.  These water pumps take a lot of labor to access and replace.  I suspect your current vehicle has a water pump that is driven by the timing belt.

Water pumps are fairly simple devices that circulate engine coolant/antifreeze around the engine and out to the radiator.  Like any mechanical device, they eventually wear out.  Although having a cooling system service done on schedule at Lee’s Accurate Auto will extend the life of your water pump and its seals and gaskets, it will eventually fail and need to be replaced.

Those water pumps that are driven by the timing belt (the belt that controls when your engine intake and exhaust valves open) are attached directly to the engine block.

The timing belt system has a protective cover.  The serpentine belt and all the accessories are located over the timing belt cover.  So getting to the water pump requires removing a lot of parts which then need to be replaced.

When the water pump must be replaced at Lee’s Accurate Auto in Mesa, it is a good idea to go ahead and also replace the timing belt, timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys.  First, because the timing belt may have been contaminated by leaking coolant; second, there is a schedule for replacing your timing belt and you might as well make the modest additional added expenditure while everything is taken apart to avoid the same labor cost down the road.

By the way, the reverse is true as well: When you are replacing your timing belt on schedule, go ahead and replace the water pump at the same time.  It would be a shame to spend the money on one of these replacements only to have to do it all again in a few months because the other then needs replacement.  Do them at the same time and start the clock over for both.

What can cause gasoline odor?

Gasoline odor is also known as the smell of death so you can understand why we were concerned when we got a call from one of our customers who said she was smelling gasoline in her garage after she parked her vehicle inside of it. Her Check Engine light had also just come on. This was something she’d never experienced before. So, she called up her NAPA Service Advisor, Accurate Automotive in Mesa, Arizona and asked what was causing it.

The answer, of course, is that many things can cause a sitting vehicle to smell like gasoline fumes. But it can sometimes be tricky to track down the source, so here are a few things you can look for that may help your NAPA AutoCare Center technician pinpoint the origin of the odor.

Gasoline odors can be caused by a leak somewhere in the fuel system, meaning gasoline can be dripping out. Some possibilities? It could be a break in a fuel line. You could have a leaky fuel-injection line or injector. There’s a vent for your fuel tank that may also leak. The fuel filler neck can wear out and fail. One thing you should look for is to see if there are any puddles of gasoline on the floor of your garage. Any time there is gasoline sitting around, it can be dangerous. Fumes can be a health hazard, and you know gasoline can catch fire if exposed to a flame or spark.

A couple of other causes of gas smells? Your vehicle may have a charcoal canister that stores excess fuel vapor. If it cracks or its seal is damaged, you may smell a strong gasoline odor. This may also cause your Check Engine light to come on. And don’t rule out something as obvious as your gas cap. It may be loose or worn out, so it doesn’t seal the fumes in. A leaky, loose, or missing gas cap may also cause the Check Engine light to come on.

Whatever the cause, if your garage has started to smell strongly of gasoline, call your NAPA AutoCare Center before you attempt to start the vehicle. Fire risk is high, so you may be advised to have your vehicle towed to the service center. Gasoline is the source of your engine’s power. If that power is unleashed in an uncontrolled way, it could hurt or kill you or others around you. We know you want to take care of yourself, and those around you and we want to help you do that so if you smell gas call Accurate Automotive right away! Our phone number is (480) 890-0409

Our Guide To A Long-Lasting Vehicle

Accurate Automotive's guide to a long-lasting vehicle.

At Accurate Automotive we know the importance of helping our customers keep their vehicles on the road reliably.

Being in business since 1992 has afforded us over thirty-one years of experience and we have seen the importance of using high-quality parts, and liquids along with delivering honest, quality vehicle repair at a price that’s fair.

Let’s say you’ve got a nine-year-old vehicle with plenty of distance on the odometer. What can you to do make it last another year or two?

Let’s start with the premise that there’s no reason that a modern car can’t run for 200,000 miles or 320,000 kilometers in Mesa with proper care. The engineering and manufacturing quality is there.

Of course, some parts will wear out along the way, but there’s no reason for a catastrophic meltdown. If you stay on top of your recommended maintenance even beyond the end of the printed schedule. For example, if a service is recommended every 15,000 miles or 25,000 kilometers when the vehicle is new, you can just keep getting it done at least every 15,000 miles or 25,000 kilometers after you go forth. But, it gets more complicated because older engines lose some efficiency. Older engines are also dirtier inside and are just more stressed. That means it’s very important to not miss any scheduled services. Skipping just one oil change, for example, leaves an opportunity for harmful sludge to build up.

So all the usual things like oil changes, transmission service, coolant service, brakes, power steering, fuel system cleaning – all that stuff needs to be maintained.

Mesa business owners who are responsible for fleet vehicles are positively religious about scheduled maintenance. They know that money spent on maintenance saves them in three ways: 1- it saves fuel, 2- it prevents costly repairs, and 3 – it can postpone purchasing new vehicles.

Having the oil changed may be the most important thing. A full-service oil change at Lee’s Accurate Auto means that all of your other fluids get topped off so they don’t get low enough to cause damage. It also gives your technician a chance to spot problems in the early stages so that you can fix them before they get expensive. And it gives you a touch point with a professional along the way to remind you of things that aren’t scheduled as often – things like differential service and timing belt replacement.

Mesa drivers with older vehicles may want to follow the severe service maintenance schedule.

Check your owner’s manual and talk with your friendly and knowledgeable Lee’s Accurate Auto service advisor. Conditions inside an older engine, transmission, and cooling system can arguably be considered severe, so shorter intervals could well be called for.

And the team at Lee’s Accurate Auto strongly encourages you to consider using high-mileage formulation fluids. They’re fluids like engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolant that are formulated for older engines. They have special additives to clean deposits and to condition and restore seals and gaskets that dry out with age. Some customers start using higher mileage formulations at around 50,000 miles/80,000 kilometers as a preventive measure.

We offer Diesel Vehicle Service and Repair

Did you know Accurate Automotive offers service and repair to many different types of vehicles? Many of our customers are surprised to learn we can help them with their diesel vehicles.

A lot of people are excited about the new diesel engines that are becoming available in passenger cars and SUV’s and they’re curious about the preventive maintenance requirements.  People may not know that diesel engines have long been used extensively in Europe and Asia.  In fact, in some markets, there are nearly as many diesel-powered passenger cars as there are gasoline.

You may ask, why has it taken so long to get in North America? There are a bunch of reasons like fuel tax policies and such, but the biggest hurdle was that North American diesel fuel had a high sulfur content – too high for the latest generation of highly refined diesel engines.  Recent government mandates to remove sulfur now open North America up to the engines the rest of the world’s been enjoying for a long time.

Why are diesel vehicles so popular worldwide?

Well, for starters, diesels get up to 30% better fuel economy than gas engines.  And they last a lot longer.  And modern diesel engines are refined, quiet, and powerful – and there’s none of that black smoke we used to see.

Some people may think that diesels create more pollution. But you need to rethink diesel vehicles.  Environmental pollution standards for diesel cars and light trucks are scheduled to be as strict as they are for gasoline vehicles.  A modern diesel engine is as clean as a gas engine.

And, there is not a lot of trade off’s with diesel in terms of performance.  A modern passenger car diesel is very smooth, quiet, and quick.  Most folks wouldn’t notice any difference.  For those who tow trailers and haul heavy loads, diesel vehicles will be an improvement.

Now diesel engines are heavy-duty, so they cost more than gas engines.  But they get better fuel economy – so the break-even point is largely dependent on the difference between gas and diesel prices at the pump and how many miles you drive.  And diesel vehicles have a higher resale value.

Now, let’s get back to diesel maintenance.

Diesel vehicles do require very clean fuel, air and oil, so their filters are much higher capacity than gasoline filters and cost more.  The engine air filter needs to be changed more frequently as well.

Repair costs are similar.  As with gasoline engines, proper maintenance is the key to long engine life and to avoiding repairs. So pretty much what we have come to expect with gas vehicles; coolant system service, transmission service, power brakes, power steering, differential, filters, fuel system, and so on. And the payoff for you, if you’re the kind that likes to keep your vehicles for a long time, is that a properly maintained diesel engine can last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

Automatic High Beam Dimmers – Not So Dim Idea

The moment someone invented headlights that had a high beam and a low beam, they also invented a problem.

That problem was what happens when you meet someone on the road going the other way who forgets to switch off their high beams?

We’ve all had it happen, of course.  All you can do is look to the right edge of the road and avoid looking directly into the offender’s headlights. We want to have high beams available for the simple reason that they can improve safety when they’re used correctly.  They allow drivers more reaction time since they can see farther down the road. What about a way to automatically have your vehicle switch off your high beams when another vehicle is approaching? Bingo! The automatic high beam dimmer! Engineers started working on this way back in the 1950s.  One automaker came up with an odd-looking device that mounted on the dash. It had a phototube in it and, when it was hit by light, it would activate a mechanism that switched headlights from high- to low beam.  The problem was, it didn’t work all that well when it mistook a lot of other lights for oncoming cars.

But steadily, technology improved, and computers were a game changer.  The latest automatic high beam dimmers work very well.  They combine a forward-looking camera in the rearview mirror with a computer to analyze the lights ahead of the vehicle.  The computer can distinguish between oncoming vehicles, reflections off street signs, taillights, ambient city lights, and street lights — a big improvement.

Engineers are also working on a split beam that would be able to selectively illuminate the road in front of your vehicle and block a portion of the light from reaching the oncoming driver’s eyes.

If you have a burned-out headlight or are noticing that your headlights are dimming, check with your NAPA AutoCare Center. They can replace headlamps to restore your night vision.

Some common things vehicle owners get serviced and/or inspected are:

  • Tires – After the winter months it’s a good idea to have your tires rotated.
  • Vehicle Underbody – We can help you catch early signs of rust or wear while your vehicle is on our lift.
  • Brakes – Have your break pads and drums looked at, especially if you hear squeaking or noises while breaking or driving.
  • Fluids – Chemicals break down over time, so even if you didn’t drive much in the winter months it’s a good idea to have your vehicle’s fluids inspected and you stay on top of your oil change schedule.

These are just a few of the many things we look at during our multi-point inspection at Accurate Automotive.

Alternator Replacements

Many Mesa drivers have probably noticed a bunch of warning lights on their dash when they start their engine. They flash on to test the circuits and then go off if everything’s OK. One of the warning lights looks like a car battery. Its job is to tell you if your vehicle battery’s not charging properly.

Mesa motorists probably know that their battery stores electricity – enough to start the engine and get moving. But that’s about it – you can only get a few miles or kilometers on battery power alone. You need an alternator to generate enough electricity to run your vehicle engine and power your electrical accessories like the stereo, power seats, heater fan, on-board computers and so on. On top of that, the alternator needs to recharge your battery. So when your vehicle alternator isn’t working, there isn’t enough electricity for all of those things. When your alternator fails, you aren’t going very far.

So why would your vehicle alternator not work?

Usually they’ve simply worn out. Alternators are driven by your serpentine belt and spin 2 to 3 times faster than the engine – that’s a lot of work. The bearings wear out, as do the copper wire coils and magnets that generate the electricity.

There’s no sense in hobbling along on AZ streets with an alternator that’s not working properly. It will fail at some point and leave you stranded on the road. Get a bad alternator replaced as soon as you can. When you come to Lee’s Accurate Auto for an alternator replacement, your friendly and knowledgeable will install an alternator that meets your ‘s specifications. Some Mesa use a lot of additional electrical gizmos in the vehicle, like computers, DVD players, power inverters and such or may regularly tow a camp trailer with a battery that recharges as you drive. If that sounds like you, ask your service advisor about upgrading to a more heavy-duty alternator to meet your needs.

We install quality NAPA replacement parts.

Get your Brakes Checked Regularly

“Friends… serving friends” has been our motto since we first opened our full-service auto shop in 1992. Now 31 years later, we are still operating with the same family principles and are proud to be Five-Star Rated and have over 350 Google Reviews.

Just this week we received a Top-Rated Service Center for 2022! Since our mission is to offer you honest, quality vehicle repair at a price that’s fair, and getting designations like these help us see we are meeting our mission. Thank You.

In order to continue to serve you in this blog post we are sharing a bit about brakes.

Every single driver on the road should know for certain just how important it is to take their car in for a regular brake inspection. Mesa AZ is home to Accurate Automotive, which would like to provide drivers with some valuable insight into why regular brake inspections are so important. Accurate Automotive is firm in the opinion that knowledge is power when it comes to car repair and maintenance. It is precisely this philosophy that motivates Accurate Automotive to share this article on brakes with East Valley drivers. Drivers should take a moment to peruse this article so that they may better understand their brakes.

First of all, when it comes to the functionality and safety of a car, there is little that is more important than the brakes. A car with bad brakes is extremely dangerous. It doesn’t take much to understand that a fast-moving car without the capacity to stop is a recipe for disaster. The best way for drivers to avoid such a situation is to stay on top of proper brake maintenance. After all, if drivers do not maintain their brakes personally, then who will? And not only is maintaining brakes important to driver safety, but it is important to the safety of every other driver and pedestrian on the road.

It is critical for drivers to have their brakes looked at if they hear anything out of the ordinary when they apply pressure to their brakes.

Most often, the sound that raises concern for drivers is that of metal rubbing on metal. This sound can indicate any number of issues. For instance, it might be that the brake caliper mounting bolts have gotten loose. Or there may be an issue with the rotor surfaces. Or it may be that your brake pads need replacing. The important thing is that you need to have somebody check your brakes who knows precisely what to look for. Only a trusted technician should examine a car’s brakes, as drivers do not want anything overlooked.

Brakes need servicing for a number of reasons. Most commonly, just regular use of the brakes gives cause for regular maintenance. Simply using the brakes wears down the pads so regular brake pad replacement becomes a necessity. Brake pads also become problematic and may require replacing if they become soaked with oil or gas. Likewise, rust causes problems and brakes may need to be replaced if rust has set in. Drivers will generally be able to feel when there are problems with their brakes because the car will not slow down as smoothly as it should.

If any noticeable decrease in stopping power is observed, drivers should immediately seek attention for their brakes.

Even drivers who do not notice any problems with their brakes should take their cars in for a brake inspection at least once a year. When so much rests on the proper functioning of the brakes, drivers simply cannot afford to forego regular brake inspection. Mesa AZ residents are in luck because Accurate Automotive provides the best in brake service and repair. With over 31 years in the business, Accurate Automotive has developed a reputation for customer service and affordable rates.

We appreciate your support over the years! If you are new to Arizona or are just in need of a vehicle repair shop we want to help. Accurate Automotive offers honest, quality vehicle repair at a price that’s fair. We have been in Mesa, Arizona since 1992 and are happy to offer you a free ride home while we diagnose and repair your vehicle.

Thank you for taking the time to read our blog. We hope we helped take some of the mystery out of vehicle service and repair.

Proper Vehicle Maintenance Builds Longevity

While it is generally not something that car and truck owners enjoy, vehicle maintenance builds longevity and is thus something every driver should practice.

Many drivers purchase a new car and only take it in for service if and when issues arise. The trouble with this is that by the time a problem is noticeable, the vehicle has likely undergone a burdening amount of wear and tear. By properly maintaining a vehicle, drivers can prevent expensive repairs. In short, practicing vehicle maintenance is a small investment to make for the benefit of prolonging the life of a vehicle. Accurate Automotive is there for Mesa drivers, and gladly takes this opportunity to provide a little insight on vehicle maintenance.

The first place drivers should turn to for advice on vehicle maintenance is the owner’s manual of their vehicle.

The manual will provide a schedule of recommended maintenance steps that drivers can follow. By following this schedule, drivers can ensure that they get the maximum use out of their vehicles.

The following are a few of the maintenance steps that drivers all too frequently overlook.

Replacing the vehicle’s air filter. Failing to regularly perform this maintenance step can cause serious problems with the vehicle’s engine, which will result in a costly repair bill. Simply replacing the filter on a scheduled basis will go a long way to increasing a car’s longevity.
Cleaning the battery posts and cables. When dirt and grime accumulate on battery posts – which inevitably happens – it can prevent the vehicle from starting. Periodically checking the posts and cables is a good idea for all drivers.
Checking the vehicle’s belts. Belts that are worn or loose can lead to serious problems. And the simple fact that belts are working constantly while a car is running leads to normal wear and tear. This problem can be remedied by simply replacing them as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. The technicians at Accurate Automotive can help with this.

Checking the vehicle’s brake pads. All too commonly drivers wait until they hear unusual noises coming from the brakes before checking the pads.

This can lead to more costly problems. Drivers who stay on top of brake pad replacement can save money on brakes in the long run.
Checking the vehicle’s fuel filter. A fuel filter that requires replacement can lead to problems such as poor fuel economy and engine problems. Simply replacing the filter does a lot for the performance of a vehicle.
Replacing spark plugs. Spark plugs must fire properly in order for the vehicle to run optimally. They are cheap to replace and should be replaced before they wear out.
Checking tire pressure and tread. Tires should be replaced before they become dangerous. Moreover, the tire pressure should be checked routinely to prevent uneven wear and alignment issues.
Checking the vehicle’s windshield wipers. During a storm is not the time to notice that the wiper blades need replacement. Replacing wiper blades is an important safety precaution.
Checking the vehicle’s timing belt. This is a big procedure that should definitely be left to the technicians at Accurate Automotive. Most people only have to perform this maintenance step once during the life of their vehicle, but failing to do so can cause serious engine damage.
Change the vehicle’s oil regularly. This was saved for last because it is perhaps the most important thing drivers can do for their cars. Drivers who change their oil every 3,000 miles seriously prolong the life of their vehicles. When a car comes to Accurate Automotive for an oil change, the technicians give it a thorough examination to check for other maintenance that may be required.
Drivers who understand that maintenance builds longevity understand the importance of regular maintenance. Again, vehicle maintenance is one of the best habits drivers can get into.

Maintenance services intervals that we recommend:

Oil and filter service – 3000 miles.
Synthetic oil and filter service – 5000 miles.
Oil and filter service with moa additive – 4000 miles.
Tire rotation and balance – every other oil service.
Alignment check – once a year.
Courtesy check – every oil service. (visual inspection of the entire vehicle and maintenance history check. Includes things like brake condition, tire condition, air filter, belts, hoses, cv axles, exhaust, battery, lights, etc…)
Brake fluid flush – 30,000 miles.
Fuel & air induction service – 30,000 miles.
Cooling system service – 30,000 miles.
Automatic transmission flush – 30,000 miles.
Fuel filter – 30,000 miles. ( if applicable )
