Imagine waking up one morning with a stomach ache. You pick up the phone, call the doctor’s office and say, “I’ve got a really bad tummy ache. How much will it cost to make me feel better?” Of course, you wouldn’t do that. You know that there could be a lot of reasons for your symptoms and that the doctor will have to examine you, ask some questions, and probably run some tests before she can tell you what’s wrong and give you treatment options. This same scenario plays every day at auto repair facilities. When the cause of the concern isn’t obvious, the vehicle will need to undergo a diagnostic process.

The typical vehicle has about 30,000 parts, including several networked computers and miles of wiring. Finding exactly what is wrong can be very complicated and take some time. The most experienced technicians at the shop are the ones that tackle the difficult diagnostic jobs.

Once they have determined the cause of the problem, they can work out the plan for how to fix it and tell you how much it will cost.
When you look at it this way, it makes perfect sense that, 1) the Service Advisor cannot provide an estimate before the diagnosis is done, and 2) there is a charge for diagnostic services. You expect to pay for an office visit to the doctor and for any needed tests before you can be presented with your treatment options and costs; same goes for your vehicle. We know it can be frustrating when something is wrong with your car and you aren’t sure what is going to be involved in getting it fixed. We’ll do everything we can to help you through the process; communicating with you at each step along the way. How do I know when I need a wheel alignment?

Question:
How do I know when I need a wheel alignment?

Lee’s Accurate Auto Answer:
When a drivers’ wheels are properly aligned they all point in the same direction. When they are out of alignment, most AZ drivers notice a couple of things. First, the vehicle pulls to one side when driving. It could be slight or pretty severe. If your wheels have been out of alignment for a while, you’ll also start to see uneven tire wear – the shoulder on either the outside or inside of the tire is worn down more than the other.

A whole bunch of steering and suspension components are joined together. Everyday driving can cause drivers’ wheels to go out of alignment over time just from the joints loosening up. That’s why most recommend an alignment check every couple of years. Depending on where you live in Arizona or the conditions you drive in (off-road driving, harsh Mesa winter conditions, poor pavement, etc.), an alignment inspection every year at Lee’s Accurate Auto may be called for.

Suspension and steering components wear over time as well, which can lead to alignment issues for Mesa drivers. Of course, a big bump, like hitting a curb or pothole, can knock a wheel out of alignment or damage a steering or suspension part.

Your friendly and knowledgeable Lee’s Accurate Auto service advisor will check your tires for uneven wear. The type of wear provides clues for what might be wrong. Undercar parts are inspected for wear and damage. The alignment machine will provide a reading of how each wheel is aligned. The reading is compared with the alignment settings recommended by the manufacturer, and then the technician makes the necessary adjustments and repairs to bring your wheels back into alignment.

Now putting off a wheel alignment in Arizona can get dangerous because of tire wear: a bad alignment can chew through a tire pretty quickly. If you see uneven tire wear, if your steering wheel is off center or if your vehicle pulls to one side, ask your friendly and knowledgeable Lee’s Accurate Automotive service advisor about getting an alignment check and we are happy to do that for you.

What you should know about your engine air filter

Today we will educate you about your engine air filter.

That’s the filter that cleans the air before it’s burned in your engine. Many people in Mesa wonder how often they should change their engine air filter. The simple answer is “when it’s dirty.” That’s a function of how much air has passed through the filter, so your vehicle manufacturer will recommend a mileage interval for replacing the air filter. But you can imagine that how dirty the air is would affect how quickly the filter gets filled.

If you drive in Mesa where there’s lots of dust, pollution or pollen, your engine air filter will get dirty more quickly and need to be changed sooner. That’s why we check the air filter with every full-service oil change at Lee’s Accurate Automotive. Since we are in your engine cabin can visually tell if the filter needs to be changed.

Your filter can only hold so much dirt. So once the filter is full, dirt will pass through to the engine. This dirt gums up the combustion chamber, hurts fuel economy, and may cause damage. It can also contaminate the Mass Air Flow Sensor which will affect drivability and can be fairly expensive to replace.

A dirty air filter would also restrict the amount of air that gets to the engine, which hurts fuel economy.

We can replace your engine air filter with one that matches the factory specifications or you can upgrade your filter for enhanced performance.

Schedule your next oil change, engine fluid flush or vehicle service and we will check your engine’s air filter and let you know if it needs to be replaced. We believe in partnering with our customers to maintain their vehicles on the road safely for many years to come. Our motto is “Friends… serving friends” and we believe in educating our customers as we would our friends to help them stay in the know and in control of their vehicles.

What you should know about anti-lock brakes

At Accurate Automotive in Mesa, Arizona our motto is “Friends… serving friends” and we want to keep our friends in the know about their vehicles. Everyone who drives a vehicle relies on their brakes to safely slow down and stop our vehicles. You’ve probably had the experience where you’ve slammed on your brakes and started to skid. When your wheels are locked up, you are just sliding over the road. And if the road is wet or slick or covered with gravel – you can really get out of control. In this scenario, steering can become next to impossible. That is why anti-lock brake systems (ABS) were invented: to help you maintain control in extreme stopping conditions.

As mentioned, control is lost when your wheels lock up, ABS keep your brakes from locking – helping you stop while maintaining your ability to steer.

Sensors on each wheel equipped with ABS, monitor wheel spin and compare it with vehicle speed sensors. When you are pressing on the brakes, still traveling forward, but your wheels are not turning, the ABS system steps in and modulates the brakes.

They ABS quickly “pumps” the brakes, not allowing the wheels to lock-up while still applying braking pressure. This is all done automatically without any intervention on your part. You will feel a pulsation through the brake pedal and will hear a clunking as the brakes are rapidly being applied and let off repeatedly. The first time this happens to you, you may be surprised and think something is wrong. Well, it isn’t – so just keep your foot on the brake and allow the ABS to do its thing. In fact, remember the 3 S’s of anti-lock brakes: Stomp, Stay, & Steer. Stomp on the brakes, keep the pedal down, and steer as needed.

When you first start your vehicle, the ABS do a quick self-check to make sure everything is OK.

The ABS warning light will briefly illuminate with all the other warning lights on your dashboard and then go out. If the system detects a fault, the ABS light will come on and stay on. Take your vehicle in for a check if the ABS warning light is on.

Proper brake system service is the best way to protect your ABS. Replacing brake fluid that is depleted and/or contaminated will help preserve proper ABS operation and protect it against corrosion. Ask your service advisor at Accurate Automotive if it’s time for a braking system inspection or service.

Have a maintenance mindset with your vehicle

We know we need to take care of our cars, but I often hear from people that it seems hard to remember to do it.

We generally accept that many things in life require regular maintenance, but just may have not applied it to our vehicles.

For example, we water and mow the lawn every week.  And weed the flower beds and rake the leaves.   We go to the dentist twice a year, take our clothes to the dry cleaner.  Flu shots.  Taking the kids for a checkup before school starts.

So, people really are maintenance minded.

They just have to learn to apply that mindset to cars.  I mean, if you never brush your teeth or go to the dentist, you’ll become painfully aware of your neglect when you get a big cavity.  Once the damage is done, we learn our lesson and start to take better care of things.

Unfortunately, people too often learn the hard automotive lesson when they have to bring their vehicle to their auto center on a tow truck.  So many times, a little routine maintenance would have prevented a breakdown.

Here’s something that will help:  The key to good vehicle maintenance starts with the oil change.  Think about it – when you go in for a full-service oil change, your tech will check all your fluids.  If one of them is low, he can look for the reason why.  If your serpentine belt is worn, he’ll see it and let you know.  Corroded battery cable – they’ve got you covered.  All of this takes a trained and experienced eye – more than you find at a quick lube center.  And they’ll check to see if your manufacturer has recommended any services at your current mileage.

So, when you come in for an oil change, you get a visual inspection and a reminder for recommended services so you can avoid a total failure.  And remember that your service advisor can help you work out a maintenance and repair plan, prioritizing and scheduling the work to make sure you and your family are safe, and avoid expensive breakdowns.

Why should I get a cooling system service?

Question:

Why should I get a cooling system service? I thought it was only necessary if my car is overheating…

Answer:

Great question! We appreciate you trusting us at Accurate Automotive with this question. We pride ourselves in offering honest, quality vehicle repair at a price that’s fair and a part of being honest is educating our customers on how their engine and vehicle systems work.

To people, it may seems that, if your engine is running at the proper temperature then everything must be just fine. But the fact is that engine overheating is the most common cause of mechanical failure and it is something that can be expensive to repair. So how do you get from everything is just fine to suddenly overheating and potential engine damage?

Truth is, it is not a sudden process, but it is an invisible one if you are not keeping your vehicles service schedule. Your engine coolant circulates through your engine where it absorbs heat and then flows through the radiator where it is cooled – and then back to the engine again. If the coolant can flow freely – and there are no leaks – then the coolant can do its job. This is the point where you must look deeper.

The cooling system is a harsh environment: very hot, with several reactive materials like various types of metal, plastics and rubber. Over time the coolant becomes corrosive. Small pieces of metal and other materials flake off and circulate in the coolant. These bits can start to clog up the small passages in the radiator, impeding the coolant flow, leading to overheating. Corrosive coolant can eat away at the system and cause leaks as well.

Now new coolant is full of anti-corrosion additives. These additives neutralize the reactions that lead to corrosion. The additives are eventually used up, leaving the cooling system unprotected.
Therefore, your vehicle manufacturer often gives a recommendation for when your cooling system should be serviced. Your service technician can also test your coolant for freeze point and PH to see if it needs to be replaced (if you’ve added straight water to the system these numbers may be off). You need to get fresh coolant in there to continue to protect against damaging corrosion.
So, if you’ve gone beyond the recommended service interval, take care of this important maintenance service to prevent unnecessary repairs down the road.
We hope this helped answer your question but if not, feel free to give us a call

Lee’s Answer on Engine Water Pumps

My water pump went out and it costs much more to replace on this vehicle than the ones I’ve had replaced in my older vehicles in the past. I trust Accurate Automotive since I’ve worked with you for many years but my technician said it’s because of where it’s located. Can you please help me better understand that?

Answer from Lead Technician and Owner of Accurate Automotive Lee Weatherby:

Thank you for being our loyal customer for so many years. We are proud of our 31 years in business and customers like you help make it possible.

The thing with engines is they are all built a bit differently. Some water pumps are driven by the serpentine belt and are bolted on out in the open with the alternator and air compressor and such.  Other water pumps are driven by the timing belt.  These water pumps take a lot of labor to access and replace.  I suspect your current vehicle has a water pump that is driven by the timing belt.

Water pumps are fairly simple devices that circulate engine coolant/antifreeze around the engine and out to the radiator.  Like any mechanical device, they eventually wear out.  Although having a cooling system service done on schedule at Lee’s Accurate Auto will extend the life of your water pump and its seals and gaskets, it will eventually fail and need to be replaced.

Those water pumps that are driven by the timing belt (the belt that controls when your engine intake and exhaust valves open) are attached directly to the engine block.

The timing belt system has a protective cover.  The serpentine belt and all the accessories are located over the timing belt cover.  So getting to the water pump requires removing a lot of parts which then need to be replaced.

When the water pump must be replaced at Lee’s Accurate Auto in Mesa, it is a good idea to go ahead and also replace the timing belt, timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys.  First, because the timing belt may have been contaminated by leaking coolant; second, there is a schedule for replacing your timing belt and you might as well make the modest additional added expenditure while everything is taken apart to avoid the same labor cost down the road.

By the way, the reverse is true as well: When you are replacing your timing belt on schedule, go ahead and replace the water pump at the same time.  It would be a shame to spend the money on one of these replacements only to have to do it all again in a few months because the other then needs replacement.  Do them at the same time and start the clock over for both.

What can cause gasoline odor?

Gasoline odor is also known as the smell of death so you can understand why we were concerned when we got a call from one of our customers who said she was smelling gasoline in her garage after she parked her vehicle inside of it. Her Check Engine light had also just come on. This was something she’d never experienced before. So, she called up her NAPA Service Advisor, Accurate Automotive in Mesa, Arizona and asked what was causing it.

The answer, of course, is that many things can cause a sitting vehicle to smell like gasoline fumes. But it can sometimes be tricky to track down the source, so here are a few things you can look for that may help your NAPA AutoCare Center technician pinpoint the origin of the odor.

Gasoline odors can be caused by a leak somewhere in the fuel system, meaning gasoline can be dripping out. Some possibilities? It could be a break in a fuel line. You could have a leaky fuel-injection line or injector. There’s a vent for your fuel tank that may also leak. The fuel filler neck can wear out and fail. One thing you should look for is to see if there are any puddles of gasoline on the floor of your garage. Any time there is gasoline sitting around, it can be dangerous. Fumes can be a health hazard, and you know gasoline can catch fire if exposed to a flame or spark.

A couple of other causes of gas smells? Your vehicle may have a charcoal canister that stores excess fuel vapor. If it cracks or its seal is damaged, you may smell a strong gasoline odor. This may also cause your Check Engine light to come on. And don’t rule out something as obvious as your gas cap. It may be loose or worn out, so it doesn’t seal the fumes in. A leaky, loose, or missing gas cap may also cause the Check Engine light to come on.

Whatever the cause, if your garage has started to smell strongly of gasoline, call your NAPA AutoCare Center before you attempt to start the vehicle. Fire risk is high, so you may be advised to have your vehicle towed to the service center. Gasoline is the source of your engine’s power. If that power is unleashed in an uncontrolled way, it could hurt or kill you or others around you. We know you want to take care of yourself, and those around you and we want to help you do that so if you smell gas call Accurate Automotive right away! Our phone number is (480) 890-0409

Our Guide To A Long-Lasting Vehicle

Accurate Automotive's guide to a long-lasting vehicle.

At Accurate Automotive we know the importance of helping our customers keep their vehicles on the road reliably.

Being in business since 1992 has afforded us over thirty-one years of experience and we have seen the importance of using high-quality parts, and liquids along with delivering honest, quality vehicle repair at a price that’s fair.

Let’s say you’ve got a nine-year-old vehicle with plenty of distance on the odometer. What can you to do make it last another year or two?

Let’s start with the premise that there’s no reason that a modern car can’t run for 200,000 miles or 320,000 kilometers in Mesa with proper care. The engineering and manufacturing quality is there.

Of course, some parts will wear out along the way, but there’s no reason for a catastrophic meltdown. If you stay on top of your recommended maintenance even beyond the end of the printed schedule. For example, if a service is recommended every 15,000 miles or 25,000 kilometers when the vehicle is new, you can just keep getting it done at least every 15,000 miles or 25,000 kilometers after you go forth. But, it gets more complicated because older engines lose some efficiency. Older engines are also dirtier inside and are just more stressed. That means it’s very important to not miss any scheduled services. Skipping just one oil change, for example, leaves an opportunity for harmful sludge to build up.

So all the usual things like oil changes, transmission service, coolant service, brakes, power steering, fuel system cleaning – all that stuff needs to be maintained.

Mesa business owners who are responsible for fleet vehicles are positively religious about scheduled maintenance. They know that money spent on maintenance saves them in three ways: 1- it saves fuel, 2- it prevents costly repairs, and 3 – it can postpone purchasing new vehicles.

Having the oil changed may be the most important thing. A full-service oil change at Lee’s Accurate Auto means that all of your other fluids get topped off so they don’t get low enough to cause damage. It also gives your technician a chance to spot problems in the early stages so that you can fix them before they get expensive. And it gives you a touch point with a professional along the way to remind you of things that aren’t scheduled as often – things like differential service and timing belt replacement.

Mesa drivers with older vehicles may want to follow the severe service maintenance schedule.

Check your owner’s manual and talk with your friendly and knowledgeable Lee’s Accurate Auto service advisor. Conditions inside an older engine, transmission, and cooling system can arguably be considered severe, so shorter intervals could well be called for.

And the team at Lee’s Accurate Auto strongly encourages you to consider using high-mileage formulation fluids. They’re fluids like engine oil, transmission fluid, and coolant that are formulated for older engines. They have special additives to clean deposits and to condition and restore seals and gaskets that dry out with age. Some customers start using higher mileage formulations at around 50,000 miles/80,000 kilometers as a preventive measure.

We offer Diesel Vehicle Service and Repair

Did you know Accurate Automotive offers service and repair to many different types of vehicles? Many of our customers are surprised to learn we can help them with their diesel vehicles.

A lot of people are excited about the new diesel engines that are becoming available in passenger cars and SUV’s and they’re curious about the preventive maintenance requirements.  People may not know that diesel engines have long been used extensively in Europe and Asia.  In fact, in some markets, there are nearly as many diesel-powered passenger cars as there are gasoline.

You may ask, why has it taken so long to get in North America? There are a bunch of reasons like fuel tax policies and such, but the biggest hurdle was that North American diesel fuel had a high sulfur content – too high for the latest generation of highly refined diesel engines.  Recent government mandates to remove sulfur now open North America up to the engines the rest of the world’s been enjoying for a long time.

Why are diesel vehicles so popular worldwide?

Well, for starters, diesels get up to 30% better fuel economy than gas engines.  And they last a lot longer.  And modern diesel engines are refined, quiet, and powerful – and there’s none of that black smoke we used to see.

Some people may think that diesels create more pollution. But you need to rethink diesel vehicles.  Environmental pollution standards for diesel cars and light trucks are scheduled to be as strict as they are for gasoline vehicles.  A modern diesel engine is as clean as a gas engine.

And, there is not a lot of trade off’s with diesel in terms of performance.  A modern passenger car diesel is very smooth, quiet, and quick.  Most folks wouldn’t notice any difference.  For those who tow trailers and haul heavy loads, diesel vehicles will be an improvement.

Now diesel engines are heavy-duty, so they cost more than gas engines.  But they get better fuel economy – so the break-even point is largely dependent on the difference between gas and diesel prices at the pump and how many miles you drive.  And diesel vehicles have a higher resale value.

Now, let’s get back to diesel maintenance.

Diesel vehicles do require very clean fuel, air and oil, so their filters are much higher capacity than gasoline filters and cost more.  The engine air filter needs to be changed more frequently as well.

Repair costs are similar.  As with gasoline engines, proper maintenance is the key to long engine life and to avoiding repairs. So pretty much what we have come to expect with gas vehicles; coolant system service, transmission service, power brakes, power steering, differential, filters, fuel system, and so on. And the payoff for you, if you’re the kind that likes to keep your vehicles for a long time, is that a properly maintained diesel engine can last for hundreds of thousands of miles.
